What is the rising sign?

The rising sign (ASC) is the sign that appears on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is where your birth chart begins and it frames the entire house system. If your sun sign tells “who you are,” the rising tells “how you appear to the world” and how you make first contact — almost the first outfit your soul puts on.

The rising colors everything from your outward appearance to your approach to life, even first physical impressions. That’s why two people born on the same day but at different times can “feel” quite different.

Why is the rising so tied to time?

The sky is constantly moving on the horizon because the Earth rotates on its axis. The rising point advances with that rotation: it changes sign roughly every 2 hours, and the degree shifts every 4 minutes. Someone born at noon and someone born an hour later often don’t share the same rising. That’s exactly why entering a precise time — rather than a guess like “around noon” — changes the result entirely.

Birth time (example)What changes?
06:00Rising usually same as the Sun sign
10:00Rising advanced by a sign or two
14:00Afternoon signs; houses become clearer
22:00Night signs; the chart turns completely

The table above is only to give you an idea; your real rising depends on your birth latitude, longitude, and date. You get the exact result by filling in the form above.

If you don’t know your birth time

If you’re unsure of your time, no problem — check “I don’t know my birth time” in the form. In that case we can’t show the rising and houses reliably (because they’d be guesses), but you’ll clearly see your Sun and Moon signs. If you truly want to find the rising, rectification in the app lets you narrow your time down together from your life events — a path you won’t find in most calculators.

Rising and sun sign together

Once you’ve found your rising, reading it together with your Sun and Moon signs completes the picture. For example, the Sun in one sign, the Moon in another, and the rising in yet another shows your many-layered nature. To draw your full chart, you can also use the birth chart calculator page.

Find your rising now — enter your birth details in the form above. On your result page you’ll see your rising, the planetary positions, and your core interpretation together.

FAQ

Common questions

How is the rising sign calculated?+
The rising is the sign ascending on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. To calculate it you need your birth date, exact time, and the city where you were born. With those three, Cosmir derives the horizon angle of the sky with a real ephemeris and shows your rising sign down to the degree.
Why is time essential for the rising sign?+
The rising depends on the angle at which the sky rises over the horizon, and that angle changes sign roughly every 2 hours; the degree shifts every 4 minutes. So even a few minutes’ error can change the rising. For an accurate result, enter your time as precisely as possible.
Can I find my rising if I don’t know my birth time?+
Strictly, no — without a time the rising can’t be computed reliably. If you check the “I don’t know my birth time” option in the form, we’ll show you your Sun and Moon signs. To find the rising, you can use the rectification method in the app, which starts from your life events.
Are the rising sign and the sun sign the same thing?+
No. Your sun sign describes your essence and life direction; your rising describes your outward manner, first impression, and the point where the chart begins. They are usually different signs, and read together the picture is complete.
Is calculating my rising sign free?+
Yes, completely free and no sign-up. Just fill in the form above; on your result page you’ll see your rising, the planetary positions, and the core interpretation.
