What is the rising sign?

The rising sign (ASC) is the sign that appears on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is where your birth chart begins and it frames the entire house system. If your sun sign tells “who you are,” the rising tells “how you appear to the world” and how you make first contact — almost the first outfit your soul puts on.

Why is the rising so tied to time?

The sky is constantly moving on the horizon because the Earth rotates on its axis. The rising point advances with that rotation: it changes sign roughly every 2 hours, and the degree shifts every 4 minutes.
