The Moon's phase is simply its angle to the Sun as seen from Earth. At the new moon the two share the same zodiac longitude and the Moon is invisible; at the full moon they sit exactly opposite and the whole near side is lit. From one new moon to the next is about 29.5 days, so most years hold twelve full moons — and occasionally a thirteenth.

Because the lunar month and the calendar month don't line up, full moon dates drift a little earlier each month. The list below gives the precise instant of each phase in UTC and the sign the Moon occupies, so you can see the yearly rhythm at a glance.
